Admissions

There are four graduate majors in mathematics, including pure, applied and computational, financial, and biomathematics, as well as the Interdisciplinary Data Science degree with a major in mathematics. Students apply to one specific major.

Elements of a Complete Application

  1. A completed online University application form. Visit gradschool.fsu.edu/graduate-admissions.
  2. Official transcripts from each college and/or university you have attended. If you attended a college and/or a university but cannot obtain a transcript, list the names of the institutions and the dates of attendance on the university application form.

Note: International applicants or degrees earned from international institutions must submit their official transcripts through the SpanTran pathway portal, or from another NACES approved evaluator. SpanTran has created a custom application for Florida State University that will make sure you select the right kind of evaluation at a discounted rate. Florida State University recommends SpanTran as our preferred credential evaluation because it offers an easy, streamline the application process. See FSU International Admissions page for more information.

  3. A statement of purpose.
  4. Three letters of recommendation. On the university application form, you will enter the names and email addresses of at least three people who have agreed to write a letter of recommendation for you.
  5. If your native language is not English: there are additional requirements, such as the TOEFL. Visit admissions.fsu.edu/international for further information.

For additional information including minimum test scores and GPA, see Graduate Application Requirements and Additional Information. Note that GRE scores are not required.

Fall Admission Deadlines

Please note that we only admit students for fall semesters; there is no spring admission.

December 15: Students with complete applications by this date will be considered for the university's Graduate School fellowships and the Mathematics Department's TA/RA/Tuition waiver awards.

April 30: Deadline for academic admission to the Department of Mathematics. Students with complete applications by this date may also be considered for any possible remaining funding.

Application Requirements and Additional Information

GPA Requirement

A GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 is required in all upper-division coursework for undergraduate students.

English Language Proficiency

If your native language is not English, and you have not received a degree from an institution in an English speaking country, then you must submit scores from the TOEFL, IELTS, or similar standardized test. The minimum score on the Internet based TOEFL is 80. Area directors may prefer higher scores when evaluating applications for admission.

For more details and minimum scores for other test options, see FSU International Admissions.

Begin Enrollment

All students start the graduate program in the fall semester (late August).

Applying for Financial Aid

Financial aid is available and awarded competitively in the form of tuition waivers, teaching assistantships (TAs), research assistantships (RAs), and university fellowships. To apply, simply say "Yes" to the question "Would you like to be considered for financial assistance?" on the Application Form. Tuition waivers, TAs, and RAs are awarded by the department; fellowships are awarded by the FSU Graduate School. See Graduate School fellowships for more fellowship details.

Selecting and Changing Area of Study

All applicants apply to a single area (you will have the option of specifying a second choice for the area). Admission and funding decisions are made by areas. Changing your area after arrival is possible but not guaranteed. Your application will need to be considered by the new area, and financial aid may not carry over. This means you should choose your area carefully according to your interests! See the Graduate Degree Programs page for information on each area's specific requirements and offerings.
