Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at Florida State University, home to researchers, educators, students and a supporting staff that strive for excellence in mathematics. The innovative research of our faculty and students covers a broad spectrum of pure and applied mathematics. Our research projects address problems in theoretical mathematics, mathematical modeling and computation, and applications in such areas as finance, the life and earth sciences, and data science. Many of our research faculty enjoy extramural grant support, greatly enhancing the impact and visibility of our activities.
Running one of the top graduate programs in the mathematical sciences in the Southeast, the department offers doctoral tracks in pure mathematics, applied and computational mathematics, biomathematics, and financial mathematics, as well as a professional master's degree program in financial mathematics. FSU's Interdisciplinary Data Science Master's Degree Program also features a mathematics major. Students receive individualized attention throughout their graduate school experience and find success in a variety of careers in academia, industry or government. Our alumni include a member of the National Academies, professors at renowned research universities, a Presidential Early Career Award recipient, senior scientists at national laboratories, and executives at various companies.
The department is proud of the vast array of academic opportunities that we offer to our undergraduates. The undergraduate program hosts four bachelor's degree tracks, providing options tailored to a variety of mathematical interests and career goals. To further enrich their academic experience, students may elect to participate in projects coordinated by the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, write an Honors in the Major thesis, join a math club and other activities.
The department also makes major contributions to the larger educational mission of the university by offering a number of general studies and basic mathematics courses, many taught by award-winning specialized faculty. With the support of the Friends of the Mathematics Department and the community, we host annual events such as Math Fun Day and the FSU High School Math Contest, reaching out to hundreds of local K-12 students. Please visit the events page for more.
